Designing an Iconic Rooftop Backdrop for Connection, Culture, and Shareable Moments

My approach was to merge street-art influence with organic, flowing forms, allowing the mural to feel alive under the open sky. Bright, high-contrast colors were chosen to stand out against the city backdrop and remain impactful under changing rooftop lighting-from sunset into night. The corrugated surface was embraced rather than hidden, using its texture to create rhythm and motion that naturally draws the eye toward the center of the dance floor and the club’s logo.

The finished mural transformed the rooftop into an immersive experience. What was once a blank wall became a dynamic focal point that amplified the energy of the crowd, strengthened Ciel Social Club’s brand presence, and encouraged guests to engage with the space through photos and video. The mural now acts as a signature backdrop for the rooftop-framing moments, fueling social media visibility, and reinforcing the identity of the venue as a destination rather than just a place to gather.

This project demonstrates how a strategically crafted rooftop mural can do more than decorate a space-it can define the experience, create community connection, and leave a lasting impression long after the night ends.

The Marriott hotel commissioned a custom mural for their rooftop Ciel social club dance floor, aiming to turn a previously overlooked wall into a bold visual centerpiece. The vision was to create a logo-centered backdrop that reflected street art culture, felt vibrant and energetic, and attracted attention from both the surrounding community and the club’s guests. The mural needed to function not only as art, but as an iconic rooftop moment-something instantly recognizable, highly photogenic, and memorable for celebrities, influencers, and regulars alike.

Before the mural, the rooftop dance floor was framed by a black corrugated metal wall that felt flat and disconnected from the energy of the space. This was an area where people gathered, danced, and spent long periods of time, yet it lacked movement, warmth, and identity. The goal was to bring life to the rooftop by transforming the wall into a visual anchor that elevated the entire atmosphere.
