Menick’s market

Case study

Issue

The rear parking area of Menick’s Market had become an overlooked and underutilized space that negatively impacted the customer experience. The large brick wall facing the parking lot was frequently targeted by graffiti and tagging, requiring ongoing maintenance while contributing to an uninviting atmosphere.

Beyond the vandalism, the space lacked character, identity, and visual appeal. As a result, the owner was unsure how to activate the area or transform it into an asset for the business rather than a liability. Through the Anacostia Mural Festival, Menick’s Market sought a creative solution that could revitalize the space, deter future tagging, and create a more welcoming environment for customers and visitors.

Solution

Commissioned through the Anacostia Mural Festival, I designed and installed a large-scale mural that transformed the once neglected wall into a vibrant visual destination. Inspired by organic movement and bold botanical forms, the artwork introduced color, energy, and a strong sense of place to the back parking lot.

The mural converted an area previously associated with graffiti into a professionally curated public artwork that encouraged respect for the space and significantly reduced future tagging. More importantly, it redefined the customer experience by creating a more inviting and memorable environment for visitors arriving from the rear parking area.

What was once an overlooked alley became an extension of Menick’s Market’s identity—a space that contributes to the neighborhood, enhances the property’s appearance, and demonstrates the power of public art to transform underutilized environments into community assets.
